The Island

Chincoteague is a town located on Chincoteague Island in Accomack County. It is known for its beautiful beaches, wildlife, and the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim.

Chincoteague and its Beaches

Chincoteague Island is adjacent to Assateague Island, a barrier island famous for its pristine beaches. The island is divided into two parts: the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (on the Virginia side) and the Assateague Island National Seashore (on the Maryland side). These protected areas offer stunning sandy beaches and dunes where visitors can relax, swim, sunbathe, and enjoy various recreational activities.

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The refuge is home to various animal species, including the famous Chincoteague ponies. Visitors can observe these wild horses in their natural habitat and explore the marshes, trails, and observation platforms that provide opportunities for bird-watching and other wildlife sightings.

A Pony Show

The Chincoteague Pony Swim dates back to the 19th century. The tradition of the Chincoteague Pony Swim dates back to the 19th century. It is believed that the ponies on Assateague Island have a feral origin dating back to the 17th century.

On the day of the swim, spectators gather along the shores of the Assateague Channel and various viewing areas to witness the event. The Saltwater Cowboys guide the ponies through the water, ensuring their safety during the swim. Once the ponies reach Chincoteague Island, they are herded into pens and allowed to rest and recover before the auction.

The pony auction takes place the day after the swim. Some foals that reach a certain age and size are auctioned off to the highest bidders. Buyers can take home their foals after completing paperwork and arrangements. The remaining ponies are returned to Assateague Island.
