About Beaufort

Beautiful Beaufort

Nestled along the picturesque Crystal Coast of North Carolina lies the charming town of Beaufort. Steeped in history, this waterfront beauty captivates visitors with its colonial-era architecture, maritime heritage, and tranquil coast.

History of Beaufort

Beaufort was established in 1709 and is the third-oldest town in North Carolina. It has a rich history that dates back to colonial times. The city was named after Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort, one of Carolina's Lords' Proprietors.

Beaufort takes pride in its well-preserved historic buildings and architecture. The town features many homes and structures that showcase different architectural styles, including Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian. The Beaufort Historic Site offers guided tours of historic homes and landmarks.

Fun fact: Beaufort has connections to the infamous pirate Blackbeard! It was rumored that Blackbeard had a house in the area, and his flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, sank near Beaufort Inlet in 1718. The Queen Anne's Revenge Shipwreck Project has been ongoing in Beaufort to excavate and study the ship's remains.

Unique Attractions

If you thought Blackbeard’s past on Beaufort was interesting, how about seeing wild horses? Shackleford Banks, a barrier island near Beaufort, is home to a herd of wild horses known as "Banker Horses." These horses are descendants of Spanish mustangs and have roamed the island for centuries. Many visitors take boat tours to Shackleford Banks to observe and learn about these unique horses.

Of course, Beaufort beaches also offer a more traditional feel, including swimming, boating, and fishing! Multiple local fishing guides have charters, offshore, and pier opportunities. Boating is the same way, with renting, buying, dock, and sailing options. There are multiple public boating launches in the Intracoastal Waterway to lead you to the sea.

Essentials

Beaufort is close to all necessities. Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is your most immediate option for travel, under an hour out. The nearest hospital is Carteret Health Care in Morehead City, less than 20 minutes away.

Merriment for All

Beaufort's timeless charm, preserved architecture, and vibrant maritime culture leave an indelible mark on all who visit. Beaufort offers a delightful blend of rich heritage and natural wonders, making it an enchanting destination for those seeking a quintessential coastal experience.
