North Port was originally developed by the General Development Corporation (GDC) as the northern Sarasota County section of its larger Port Charlotte project. The other section extended into neighboring Charlotte County. GDC initially named the city “North Port Charlotte,” and it was officially incorporated under that name through a special act of the Florida Legislature on June 18, 1959. In 1974, residents voted in a referendum to shorten the name to “North Port,” reflecting the community’s desire to establish its own distinct identity.
