6 Saint Michael's Alley has a rich Charleston history. Built by Robert Downie, local tinsmith and metalworker, circa 1814, it was first used as offices for some of Charleston's most influential city attorneys and businessmen. It later served as tenement housing following the destruction of the Civil War. Perhaps its most notable owner was Susan Pringle Frost, who later founded the Preservation Society of Charleston. She likely transformed the property into the single-family residence it is today, making it among the first of the city's rehabilitation efforts in the early 20th century.The property was extensively renovated in 1999 by reputable T.W. Graham Restorations, preserving its historic character and charm, and it has since been meticulously maintained using the highest standards.
